How it works

  1. Add the dates. First closed day, last closed day and reopening day. Leave the last two empty for a single day.
  2. Choose how it should sound. Warm, brief or formal, for an email, a text message or a notice board.
  3. Edit, copy or print. Change any word, copy it, print the sheet or save everything as plain text.

How the dates are worked out

  • Day count: both the first and last closed day are counted, so 31 December to 1 January is 2 days.
  • Weekdays: names come from the calendar, including across the turn of the year.
  • Reopening: if you leave it empty, it is the next weekday after the closure.
  • Different hours: half days and early pickups must fall outside the closure. The notice lists them by date.
  • Reminders: the notice goes out 14 days before closing, then reminders at 7 days, 1 day, and the day before reopening. Weekend send dates move to the Friday before.

Text message length

One text holds 160 plain characters. When a message runs longer, each part holds 153. Curly quotes, long dashes and emoji switch a text to a different format, which cuts each part to 70 characters (67 when joined). The meter under every message shows the count as you type, and one button swaps those characters for plain ones.

The guide How to write a clear holiday closure message walks through three worked examples: a single day, a two-week break across the year-end and a partial week.

Questions

Does the tool keep what I type?

No. Everything you enter stays on this page and disappears when you close it. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere, so there is nothing to sign in to.

Can I use it for dates outside December and January?

Yes. Any closure dates work, including a single day. The December 2026 and January 2027 examples are there because that is when most closures happen.

What if my closure includes a weekend?

Weekend days are counted in the total because families think in calendar days. The dates panel also shows how many of those days are weekdays, and warns you when every closed day is a weekend day.

Why does a reminder date move?

Send dates that land on a Saturday or Sunday move to the Friday before, because a reminder is more useful when it arrives on a working day. The reminder says when it moved.
